Students and staff participating in United Way Week brought nickels on Tuesday, Oct. 22, and wore their stylish hats to school! Other events during the week are Turner Spirit Day and pajama day. Lisa Wood, TE librarian, has made a special reading room for students to relax and read their favorite books!
Not only does Mrs. Ochoa or "Miss Lalie", as she is known by her students, teach all day at Turner Elementary but she also spends time at the new Lakeshore Learning Store in Merriam! Mrs. Ochoa will be doing a free children’s craft every Saturday from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. She says, "I am excited to be a part of a great store that helps teachers and families find the perfect tools for teaching and learning." Along with the children's crafts, she will also be doing teacher workshops.
Turner Elementary students practiced bus evacuations on Tuesday, Oct. 15th. This is a yearly event so that students know what to do in case of an emergency. The annual Turner Days Parade was held on Saturday, Oct. 12th. Lots of Turner spirit was shown on a beautiful fall day! SPLASH! FAMILY FUN NIGHT was held on October 8th. StoneLion Puppet Theatre presented the Down the Drain Puppet Show at 6:30 p.m. Students and families enjoyed games, arts and crafts and jugglers. Students had submitted designs for rain barrels and the winning design was Ava Kroh's, a 4th grade student! A rain barrel provides an ample supply of free "soft water" to homeowners, containing no chlorine, lime or calcium, making it ideal for gardens, flower pots, and car and window washing. A rain barrel will save most homeowners about 1,300 gallons of water during the peak summer months!!!! Congratulations Ava on the winning design! ESL NIGHT was held on Thursday, September 19 th from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Families met at the school cafeteria at 6:00 for dinner compliments of Fazoli's!. A presentation was given about our ESL Program (English as a Second Language program). This program provides students with an opportunity to value their home language and learn English as a second Language. After the presentation, parents were able to meet with the child’s grade level teacher. Translators were available to make this night more meaningful.
Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students) is a program that focuses on providing positive male role models in local elementary schools. Each year we ask fathers, grandfathers, step-fathers, uncles, etc. to spend at least one day volunteering at our school. These D.O.G.S. spend time in the classroom, lunchroom, recess – where ever they are needed! In addition to being on the Watch D.O.G.S. Wall of Fame they also receive an official T-shirt! This year at our annual kick-off event we served over 100 Dads and kids a hotdog dinner (with chips & cookies)! Many Dads signed up to help out… but don’t worry , if you didn’t make it you can still volunteer. Contact the school office for more information. |
